We are together again with curiosity, excitement and hope.
Oguz Perincek, Umut’s dad. February 5, 2023, earthquake, he was on the ground with other YUVA volunteers and them. They bring help to Hatay, and also Oguz Perincek is an electrical engineer who also helps solve the electric problems. His children and his wife were under the collapsed building, and unfortunately, he lost his son UMUT on October 30, 2020,. Even though it hurt to be on the ground because it was reminded of those endless hours, he is the one who really understood what other people were going through and chose to help them emotionally as well.

How ELIF Became HOPE
On October 30, 2020, the lives of thousands of people were changed with the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in İzmir. The perspective of millions of people changed with the earthquake. The Perinçek family was just one of the families whose lives changed. After being trapped in the wreckage of their home in Doğanlar apartment site for 23 hours, mother Seher Perincek and three of her children (Ezel, Elzem, and UMUT) were removed from the wreckage of the Doğanlar apartment. 65 hours later, their fourth child, little daughter Elif, was rescued. The photograph of her hand holding on to the rescuer’s thumb became symbolic of the hope that all people deserve.
The whole of Türkiye united as one heart for the citizens under the rubble. Their care, tears, efforts, and prayers flooded to Izmir. The father, Oğuz Perincek, put to work his patience and determination to save his family by sketching the layout of his house for the rescue team to use as a map. That experience was forever engraved in people’s memory.
The earthquake itself was over, but for the Perinçek family and millions of others could not say it was finished. Their son, Umut, did not survive his injuries and the family was devastated. “HOPE is always everywhere,” said UMUT, even though he is not physically with us. ELİF became HOPE, and after 65 hours, she held on to life tightly with her tiny body but a huge heart.
The Perincek family are not the only victims of earthquakes, nor are earthquakes the only source of humanitarian disasters. The most important thing is to be able to reach those in need of help, and take action to be a salve for their wounds.
Umut’s name translated to English means “Hope”. Hope is what creates our future, dreams, maturity, naturalness, purity, and virtue. From now on, Umut will find life in every smiling and happy child, thanks to YUVA. The purpose of the YUVA Foundation, which was established to keep the name of Umut alive and pass it on to future generations, is to support our children, who are our future, in every way so that the innocence in their hearts and the spark of happiness in their eyes are not lost.
